Food

pigs180.jpgWith so many TV programmes about food it is easy to say we are passionate about cooking. We are passionate and we do try just that little bit harder than most and this is reflected in our Gold Award from the NFU organised ‘Taste of the West’ food competition. Every county in the South West has just one Gold Award Winner…. with the exception of Somerset who we share with one other property. We are delighted to be recognised for our efforts in using local produce.

We are living on Exmoor and we have a wonderful selection of locally produced meat, fish, cheese, eggs, butter, milk, preserves, honey, and apple juice; even the tea and coffee is locally blended.  We have linked local produce to organic food and attempt to provide the best. We hand squeeze oranges and grapefruit each morning to produce amazing tasting fresh juice. We also produce bread from flour purchased from the 17th century working water mill in Dunster.

Our selection of Quantock Mueslis’ is produced by Justine Comer and come packed with jumbo raisins, cranberries, apples, apricots and hazelnuts. They are hand made and taste totally fantastic.

victoria-cranfield.jpgJams are handmade by Victoria Cranfield and are based on fresh West Country fruit. Victoria does not believe in using pectin in her recipes because it blurs the fresh fruit taste. We also offer for sale a selection of Brendon Hill Crafts jams and chutneys. Handmade by Ruth and Derek de Maid in Barnstaple, meet them on a Friday at the West Somerset Farmers Market and share their enthusiasm!

Specially Sourced
Home Made Ingredients .
Our project for this year is to work with a local farmer in the next village who rears pigs. We are buying free range, rare breed ‘Large Blacks’. We are having them made into our recipe sausages. Our bacon is specially cured and locally smoked for us.  . The bacon is being naturally smoked, with quite a deep ‘smoke’ and is then being thickly cut…… the result will be fantastic and will be a total taste sensation!

We believe breakfast is an important part of the day and ought to be relaxed and civilised, that is why we offer breakfast from 8.00am to a leisurely 10.00am. If you are celebrating, then we also offer as a supplement, a glass of Premier Cru Champagne; the perfect way to start the day!

wine.jpgTea, Wine & Picnics.
Tea is back in fashion and is very cool. So cool in fact that we asked D J Miles & Company to help us and find some interesting teas. They are passionate about tea and set us on the road to offer something quite different. You can have the choice of their well tried and loved Original Blend or for a complete change you can sample a hand tied Green Tea ‘Flower’ Ball……which opens to show a Jasmine Blossom in the glass teapot; pure luxury and total entertainment!

We are able to provide an eclectic wine list. We have a standard and short list, an exclusive Bin End selection of some excellent wines as well as a portfolio of 850 wines from which to call. Wine has been our passion for almost 40 years.

We are able to provide packed lunches or luxury picnics.
For groups who have total exclusivity to Spears Cross we offer evening meals. We again major upon local produce including Venison, Exmoor Lamb, Trout, Duck and Pheasant.
